Israel at 74: come a long, long way

Today is Yom HaAtzma’ut, or Independence Day in Israel. On May 14, 1948, or 5 Iyar 5708 on the Hebrew Calendar,

Ever since, we’ve marked our Independence Day on 5 Iyar, except when (like this year) that day falls on Shabbat, then we move the celebration to the last business day before it.

The Maccabeats with their own, a capella, take on the Scroll of Independence.

A video message with birthday greetings from around the world (including some places you would not expect).

Sure, there is much left to do, but the country has come a long, long way. Herb Keinon reflects

Yom Atzmaut sameach!

A testimony to the power of persistence (and that of a simple Dorian mode progression :))
